Fox Horror Classics, Vol. 2 (Chandu the Magician / Dr. Renault's Secret / Dragonwyck)
Published September 1, 2008, 4:29 am, DVD Talk
As with their first, welcome set, Fox Horror Classics, Vol. 2 is a real misnomer of a title. Two out of the three films - they are Chandu the Magician (1932), Dr. Renault's Secret (1942), and Dragonwyck (1946) - aren't remotely horror films though each has some of the ingredients.

- dr. mckay makes girls go wild: It's entirely possible, John realizes, that McKay makes girls lose their shit. He's not even smug about it, he doesn't brag, John didn't even know Rodney was still fucking her, and that makes it worse, like he's so used to it he doesn't even know it's anything special. No one's ever scratched John in bed except Marisa Spiegel, in 1998, when she scratched his eyeball by mistake because her nails were too long and John turned his head the wrong way.

- and a roost for every bird: The thing about London, John had quickly realised, was that it was a city. Kind of obvious, yeah, and it wasn't like he'd never been in a city before?he' ;d grown up splitting his time between the farm in Virginia and the ranch in Nevada, not the back of beyond, and the city was only ever a couple hours by car from his folks' place; besides, he'd been at CalTech a while now. But London was a such a sprawl of momentum made visible in concrete and stone, such a gathering of people and buildings and age that it felt like a city concentrated; even after a couple of days there, he still felt unsettled, excited, eyes drawn always upwards to a skyline that seemed to renew itself with every corner he turned.

- at the end of the pier: He hesitates only a second outside Rodney's room, hand poised over the chime, because he doesn't want to ring it. Instead, he bites his lip and raps softly on the door with his knuckles. He doesn't hear anything, though Rodney's got to be there, and John stares down at his long, pale feet, hairs like wires on his toes, while he waits for Rodney to get out of bed. He braces one hand on the door. Come on, Rodney. Come on -

- motorcycle ficlet: "Here,&qu ot; Rodney says, pushing John's motorcycle helmet into his hands. "Wear this, and take this ? " he pulls a ragged $20 bill out of his pocket, balancing Merrie on his other hip, ignoring how she's pulling at his earlobe, " ? so that you can get gas if you need it, or water, or, I don't know, a suspicious hot dog from a vendor in Decorah, anything you want, just no alcohol, but you know that, you wouldn't do that, anyway. Yes."
