The following information is about Pathos.

Pathos Defined

A scene or passage in a work evoking pity, sorrow, or compassion in the audience or reader, such as the poignant summation of the old man's grief in Wordsworth's Michael:
Many and many a day he thither went,
And never lifted up a single stone.
Sidelight: The use of understatement (meiosis) is often an effective way of achieving pathos.
(Compare Bathos)

  • Until We Meet Again (1/2), by hollycomb: During his sixth year at Hogwarts, Teddy received only one letter from Harry Potter: a record low. As with anything to do with his famous caregiver, his classmates regarded the letter with curiosity, and Teddy had to creep off to a quiet corner of the castle to read it in private. He wasn't sure why, but he increasingly felt like he had to protect Harry's interests from the prying eyes of onlookers.

  • Reverb, by leonidasden: Castiel has never known war before. He didn?t fight during Lucifer?s War: he fled. He hid from the burning light of the Morning Star's attention and the cold wind of the Father's displeasure, and by the time he crept out to take a look around, it was all over. This time, he?s in the middle of everything. He dips both wingtips in blood and watches his brothers die and weeps with the horrible, useless waste of it all. Sometimes, though, he laughs. God has sent Lucifer?s Bane to stop his Ascension. He has appointed Castiel to Damn the Morning Star a second time. The irony of it hasn?t escaped him.

  • Dummy With the Rapture, by hansbekhar: The apocalypse has turned Singer Salvage Yard into a refugee camp. Dean?s pretty sure it?s driving Bobby up the fucking wall, but Hell?s only come to Bobby?s house in a figurative sort of sense and that?s enough to be grateful for, if you ask him. There are people sleeping in hallways, on the porch, anywhere they can find room. Dean recognizes a lot of them, weirdly enough. They?re all people that he?s saved. Castiel moves among them like a shepherd. Speaks less than Dean does, even though everyone looks at them like saviors, like they?re going to make everything right again. Serves him right, Dean supposes, showing up with a fucking angel in tow. Like a big neon sign of hope wrapped up in a trench coat and a tie.

  • The Last Word, by greensilver: "You can't go on like this forever, sire," Lancelot says, his voice low, for Arthur's ears alone. "If you keep throwing your lives away for one another, one day it will take." Arthur forces a smile. "And when that day comes," he says, the words wheezed out of lungs that won't fill, "you will discover, Lancelot -- I always get the last word." Lancelot closes his eyes, looking like a man in mourning already.

  • The Weight of Words, by waldorph: Arthur does not have that liberty?must temper and choose his words carefully, because every word he utters once gone from his lips is no longer his own, but rather belongs to the ears which hear it, and the mouths which repeat it. And then Merlin comes along, and firmly refuses to give in to Arthur. Refuses to become part of the landscape. Merlin he can insult without sending a ripple through the servile hierarchy, because Merlin (astonishingly ) insults back.
